Each day a new five-letter word is selected, which the player is tasked with figuring out within six guesses.
After a guess is entered each letter is marked either green, yellow or gray. Green means the letter is both correct and in the right position, yellow shows the letter is right but in the wrong position and gray means it’s not part of the answer in any place.
Wordle was developed by New York based British software engineer Josh Wardle, as a play on his name.
Wardle told Newsweek his initial goal been to “make a game that my partner would enjoy playing”.
In January 2022 the game was purchased by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, though it remains free to play.
During an interview with TechCrunch in January, Wardle explained the game is fundamentally the same as when he first invented it.
He explained: “What I built [at the start] is the game that everyone is playing today.”
Asked about Wordle’s popularity, Wardle replied: “It was definitely not the intention when I started.”
The creator admitted he sometimes struggles to figure out the answer himself, explaining: “I feel smart when I get a Wordle, even though I made the game.”
Wordle, a pun on the creator’s name, has inspired a range of other games, such as Dordle, Quordle, Worldle and even the mathematics-themed Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle is “needy.”
Containing three vowels, two of which are the same common letter, today’s Wordle might not have been the most challenging for everybody but we’re sure it was great fun!
