The rules may be simple, but picking the correct five letter-word in six attempts can be anything but. If a tile turns green not only is the letter in the word, it is in the right place.

If a tile turns yellow, then you have picked a correct letter but it is in the wrong place. A gray letter means the letter is not in the word at all and so should be ruled out.

If you manage to get the word, a box appears showing you your success rate, which can be shared on social media.

The creation of software engineer Josh Wardle, the game has enjoyed exponential growth since its release in October 2021. From being played by a few dozen people, to being the daily fix for millions, its global reach was assured when it was bought by The New York Times.

A pun on the creator’s name, Wardle did get some help from his partner Palak Shah in developing the game which has inspired other brainteasers, such as the math-based Nerdle, the music-based Heardle, and the more challenging Quordle, which asks players to solve four words in nine attempts.
