In fact, the online puzzle became so popular that several similar games have emerged in its wake, including Quordle, Squabble and Herdle.
And if you’re new to the craze, you can access the daily word game for free here. The puzzle requires you to guess a five-letter word in six attempts or less, and the clues provided are all color-coded.
The Origins of ‘Wordle’
It was first launched at the height of the pandemic by software engineer Josh Wardle for him and his partner. He had first started working on it back in 2013 and returned to it during the pandemic to perfect it.
He made the game public first in October 2021, and it started out with just 90 active players, which quickly grew into over 45 million users.
Currently, it is owned by the New York Times Company, which bought it for a reported seven-figure sum in January 2022.
