Wordle was originally created by Josh Wardle and it offers users a 5-letter brainteaser they have to solve in six tries, or less.

The game helps players along the way by providing a color-coding system: green if the letter is in the correct place in the word, yellow if it’s not, and grey if the letter isn’t in the word at all.

Wardle originally made the game for him and his wife to play and then made it public in October 2021 where it quickly became a global phenomenon, he went on to sell the game to The New York Times in January 2022 and it moved over to the publication in February.

Wordle is so popular that it has become an inspiration for several similar games including the math-based equation game Nerdle and the globe-trotting guessing game Worldle.
