As developer Josh Wardle told Newsweek in an exclusive interview, the game’s database is comprised of over 2,500 words. This is enough for approximately 7 years’ worth of daily brainteasers, guaranteeing that Wordle will be sticking around for a very long time (provided that users don’t lose interest after it potentially gets locked behind a paywall).
To ensure that Wardle himself can play along like everyone else and that he doesn’t have an unfair advantage, the website cycles through these puzzles in a random order. In other words, he doesn’t know what’s coming up tomorrow any more than the rest of us do.
Given its arbitrary nature, Wordle cannot celebrate special occasions with any special words. The solution for Halloween 2021 was the prosaic “Click”, Thanksgiving just had “Wrote”, Christmas Day was “Picky”, and the New Year was rung in with “Rebus”.
