Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has hit out at his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, blaming him for the bitter end to Keane’s United career. The inspirational midfielder ended his time with United on a bad note after an apparent row with Sir Alex, and he has now claimed that Fergie’s success wouldn’t have been possible without players like himself.
Keane moved into coaching after retiring from profesional football but hasn’t enjoyed much success though. Many have questioned his mangerial capabilities, comparing him with his ex-manager, but Keane is adamant that success did not come just like that for Fergie.
“If you want to question my managerial record … listen, you could question every pundit’s managerial skill in relation to his and we’re all going to come up short. But I would also say that without players like myself, maybe he wouldn’t have such a good managerial record because players who go down the punditry road, it’s soon forgotten that we put bodies on the line for him.”
There has been a lot of criticism for the way in which Keane ended his United career but it must be admitted that nobody really understood the whole row. Opinions are divided among many but as far as Keane was concerned, his former boss did not stand up for him when it mattered the most.
“People say he stood by me in difficult times,” Keane said. “But [he didn’t] when I was 34, not when I was towards the end and had a few differences with Carlos Queiroz. All of a sudden then, ‘Off you go, Roy, and here’s the statement we’ve done’.”
However, the ex-United hero still insisted that his love for the club has never and will not deteriorate by any means.
“I count my blessings to have played for Manchester United. All of my family are United fans and I don’t have any bitterness towards Man United, please let’s make that clear.”
