“On our first date I didn’t have money so he only bought himself food,” a voiceover for heydiberber’s video claimed. “Should I go out with him again?”

The video shows an empty space on a table in front of the TikToker before it panned over to her date’s table setting that had a meal in front of him.

“He said pay me or pay me no attention,” the voiceover said.

The Harvard Business Review published a piece examining the financial aspect of the expectations to pay for dates. For years, the men were expected to pay for a woman’s meal when out on a date. However, the piece stated it was important to be upfront about money from the start in order to find a comfortable balance for both people.

It continued and stated that if a couple continues to date one another, clear boundaries about how much will be spent on gifts and dates are vital.

Maryanne Parker, an etiquette coach, told Rewire that as dating trends changed, so too has the etiquette.

“The person who initiates the invitation always should be ready and not only willing but almost obligated to pay the bill,” she told the outlet.

When responding to a comment to the video, heydiberber said she asked him out for the date.

A few viewers wrote that her date should have paid for her meal.

“Real men [pay] for dinner when going out,” a comment read.

Another viewer wrote, “Run girl run. Huge red flag. He is not a gentleman for sure.”

“And that’s on dating boys, because real men would pay for you,” another comment read. “On the second date you can offer to pay.”

Others, however, said she shouldn’t have gone on a date without any money and should not have expected him to pay for her meal.

“First off, you don’t go on a date expecting the other person to pay,” one TikTok viewer wrote. “Always bring your own money and order what you can afford.”

Another comment echoed the sentiment and said it was “disrespectful” to assume he would pay for her meal.

“My dad taught me to pay for myself. That way there’s no expectations except a good conversation,” one viewer lamented.

“So you just go out with no money?” a viewer wondered. “Cool.”

Some commended the TikToker’s date for not paying for her meal.

“He’s been played too many times and not getting played again. Much respect for him,” a comment read.

Newsweek reached out to heydiberber but did not hear back in time for publication.
