What happened at the end of White Lines on Netflix?
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the finale of White Lines
In Episode 10, viewers get a flashback to the birthday party where it was previously established Axel had been killed. Viewers then learned that the Oriel had an alibi for the night when he was seen having sex with David after they had taken heroin. This was something that David had kept secret for decades due to not wanting the brutal Calafats to know that he was the one who had begun Oriol’s heroin addiction.
With Oriel out of the picture, the true killer of Axel was revealed. At his 24th birthday party, Axel told friend Anna that he wanted to start afresh, and so had sold his entire music empire before burning the 100 million pesetas it had brought him. Anna had been cheating on her partner Marcus with Axel, and felt furious at Axel’s action–furious enough to kill him.
After he had a bad reaction to some cocaine, Anna held him in the swimming pool until she thought he had drowned. She then got Marcus to hide the body in Oriol’s car, explaining why Axel’s blood had been found in the boot in some later flashbacks.
However, Axel just refused to die. He regained consciousness and tried to get out of the car, meaning that Marcus had to run him over. When being hit by a tyre wrench did not do the job, Anna had to put a screwdriver through his brain.
Back in the present day timeline, Anna finally reveals why exactly she killed her friend and lover. Speaking to Axel’s daughter Zoe, she said she did it because she was scared Axel would tell Marcus about their affair and Marcus would leave her.
That is eventually what happened, as Marcus and Anna parted ways for good when Marcus learned how he’d been manipulated.
This all means that if the show gets a Season 2, it will be a slightly different show. Zoe ends this season scattering ashes by the sea, suggesting she has finally found closure. And with the murder mystery solved, the show will have to find a new plot.
However, there are a number of threads that could be picked up for another season. Marcus, for example, owes nearly €300,000 to Romanian drug traffickers, which has caused him to get into business with his new in-laws the Calafats. Anna, meanwhile, ends the show marrying a man she does not love, meaning that we could return to her life in Season 2 and see how she gets over Marcus.
